1) number表示数量。由于是单数形式,谓语动词需要与之相配,为has increased。这种主语和谓语在数上的匹配称作“主谓一致”。当主语为复数概念是,谓语动词用复数形式与之匹配;当主语为单数概念时,谓语动词则用单数形式。

2) the number of…“……的数量;……的数目”。作主语时,谓语动词应用单数形式。
